Brake Drums

While they are old technology, brake drums still play a role in the braking system on some vehicles. They are generally used on the rear wheels, and are most often found on pickup trucks today, particularly classic models that do not have four-wheel disc brakes. The drum serves the same purpose as a brake rotor in a disc-based system. When you press the brake pedal, fluid moves from the master cylinder, through the brake lines, to the rear brakes, where it activates the brake shoes. Those shoes move outward and touch the inside of the brake drum, where they create friction to slow the vehicle down. Like rotors, brake drums are subject to wear and tear, and you'll eventually need to replace them. They can also rust and be damaged in accidents.
